Your Stress Response Could Be Related to Your Great Grandmother's Exposure to Chemicals
22 May   by Lisa

Diet-related Disease Risk Factors Can Be Explained By Epigenetics
21 Mar   by Lisa

Until recently, it was thought that our genes, our inherited traits were the only factor that influenced our outcomes.  If we had heart disease in our family history, we were destined to have heart disease.  However there is a fairly new and exciting field called epigenetics which shows us there is actually something we can do ourselves to influence our outcomes.  Epigenetics studies how our environment and the choices we make in life influence our genetic code.

In a recent study printed in the Journal of Nutrient Nutrigenomics, different mechanisms were reviewed showing that what we eat certainly does influence our disease outcome.  This study focuses on how different diet modifications and nutrients may affect our risk factors for atherosclerosis.  The study recommends that epigenetic information be used to in addition to genetic information when looking at disease pathways and risk factors.

Who Really Needs A Gluten Free Diet?
09 Mar   by Lisa

Gluten free this and gluten free that.  Gluten free products are everywhere!  The consumers demanded and the manufacturers provided.  We see gluten free on labels (of products like potato chips which never HAD gluten in them in the first place!).  We see gluten free packaged products on store shelves.  We are a country preoccupied with gluten!

But wait, there are still some people who HAVE to follow a gluten free diet for medical needs.  People diagnosed with Celiac, an auto-immune disease must follow a very strict diet or risk their health and longevity.  And there are also people who have a diagnosis of gluten sensitivity.  These people are relieved of intestinal and abdominal concerns when they avoid gluten.  But are there too many people avoiding wheat products without being diagnosed?  And what studies need to be done?

Tired of Those Lingering Cold Symptoms?
08 Mar   by Lisa

It's definitely cold season!  It seems like everyone has, has had, or knows someone that has a cold in the last few weeks.  Getting adequate sleep (that means 7-10 hours for most of us), eating a diet packed full of vitamins and minerals, and exercising all help keep our immune system healthy.  A new study from the University of Florida has found that garlic can help decrease cold symptoms and occurrences.  Read more about it here:  http://www.sacbee.com/2012/03/08/4318978/integrative-medicine-aged-garlic.html
